Lynn Roy Brackel passed away surrounded by his family on March 24, 2024, at St. Alexius hospital in Bismarck, ND.

Lynn was born on September 14, 1943, to Henry and Amelia (née Gimbel) Brackel in Mott, ND. He enjoyed growing up with his four brothers on the family farm and being a Mott Cardinal. He graduated high school in 1961 and earned a music degree from Dickinson State College in 1965. He subsequently taught Music and German at the Underwood school system, and it is here that he met Judith “Judy” Ann Jemtrud while she was a manager at Jack’s Hairstylists in Underwood. They wed on August 15, 1969, at the Valle Lutheran Church in Rolette, ND. Shortly thereafter they moved to Bowman, ND, to begin their lifetime commitment to each other and their family.

Loyal servant, humble leader, cherished friend, father, and husband – these are some of Lynn’s many great attributes. He was a man that knew where he stood in the world and generously gave of himself every day of his life. He was fiercely proud of his North Dakota roots, his family, and his community, extolling their virtues to everyone he encountered. Lynn’slifelong journey of volunteering and leadership roles within the church, township and county began in late 1969 when he arrived at Bowman as a music teacher. For over 30 years he served as the community band and the church choir director, sharing and inspiring his passion for music that began in his youth as a member of the Brackel Trio and Rockin’ Bob & the BeeBops. He and Judy ran the Brackel Plumbing business for over 30 years, serving as an employer to many school-aged youths and young adults. This also allowed Lynn the opportunity to lead the Bowman County Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club as president and board member of each, as well as serving a County Fair board member and Economic Development Cooperation member. Upon selling and retiring the plumbing business in 2009, Lynn was elected for the first of his 14 years as a county commissioner, chairperson, and zoning board member. In these roles he was a diligent steward of the community resources and staunch advocate for Bowman County. Never content to remain idle, Lynn had many other projects and adventures throughout his life. He showcased his collection of vintage tractors and engines as an active member of Yesterday’s Farmers, eagerly awaiting the annual parades and events. For the last several years Lynn, along with his companion Marie Snavely, combined their love of bicycling and travel to create many wonderful memories. They also championed by the Bowman Regional Library Greenspace fundraising efforts. This is a fitting culmination and tribute for Lynn’s lifetime of civic duty, a man that gave his all to family, friends, and community.

Lynn and Judy are now reunited in heaven after 50 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Robert and Theodore, and his parents. He is survived by his children, Bill and Lynna’ Speier, Glen and Dr. Lorelle Davies, and Bradley and Judy “Bunny” Brackel; siblings Darrell of Bismarck, ND, and Leo of Mott, ND. His cherished grandchildren Caralissa, Caitlyn, Siteris, Kyleigh and Taylor will miss their grandfather dearly.
